Shuri Castle Park
Shuri castle park contains not only the main castle buildings, but also numerous historic cultural buildings on its periphery such as the beautiful Shureimon Turret Gate, Enkakuji Temple, and Bezaitendo Hall. It is recorded that Shuri Castle was used as a palace by the 1st Sho Dynasty following the unification of the three Ryukyu kingdoms, and was later expanded and enhanced by the 2nd Sho Dynasty. After being burned to the ground during the Okinawa battle of World War 2, it was then partially restored and opened to the public in 1992 as Shuri Castle Park. It was registered as a World Heritage Site in December 2000 as part of the designated castles of the Ryukyu Kingdom.[About 60 minutes by car from Hotel Monterey Okinawa Spa & Resort]
